Making a fire
Our hardwood may smoke when lighting (in particular the very dense Camel thorn/Kameeldoring) but once fully alight because of its density will not smoke and will last and last
There should be no unpleasant Smokey smells or woody mustiness in your room
There are many ways to make a fire but there are certain steps that ensures the end result is a safe, quality fire
  •    Clean your chimney/flue (Hire a professional)
  •    Clean your hearth
  •    Use seasoned hardwood
  •    Make newspaper bows
  •    Create good airflow through your flue /chimney
Have patience you will get better with practice
We can only recommend this procedure for our dry seasoned wood and kindling.
Some other woods are damp and no amount of burning will prevent smoke and chimney tar
Method
When making a fire I suggest you open doors until there are flames and the initial smoke is expelled
If you have a wood burner, to get air to the fire, open the burner door wide and the top and bottom vents, the fire will ignite more quickly
Clean out nearly all the ash. Please put in fireproof container as embers may still be warm.
Use the double page sheets of the newspaper.
Twist and tie each piece into a bow. Put several bows into the fireplace / wood burner.
Place the kindling on top of the paper in a wigwam shape so that kindling is pointing upwards then light the paper
Remember to wear your heat proof gloves
Once the Kindling is fiercely burning, add the firewood
Remember you need to leave space in between the wood to aid air flow which feeds the flames.
Put in size order smaller peices first
Also put a few paper bows on the top of the wood along with a few sticks of kindling
This will produce strong roaring flames and the result will be worth it
If after a while the wood resembles charcoal, put more kindling on
The fire is not hot enough and may produce smoke
You do not need to try topping up your fire
When there are plenty of red hot embers let them keep you warm for a while

If your wood starts to smoke at any time then the temperature is too low, add more paper and kindling
Regulating the fire
Wood burner-Open the air vents you need air flow up the chimney to get the fire started once the wood catches close the door and regulate the vent depending on how high you want the flame (open more fire, close less fire)
When the raging fire burns off the glowing embers will stay warm for hours
Good hardwood will not only produce good clean flames but long lasting warm glowing embers
Fireplace-You may need bellows to get the flames roaring

Important Safety points
Remember unseasoned wood smokes more and all the time it is burning it creates fewer flames. The smoke continuously emits poisonous gases
It is important to be aware of certain safety aspects when burning firewood
Please do not panic but there are certain potential hazards you should be aware of which can be easily rectified
  • Unseasoned wood leaves deposits in your chimney that can cause chimney fires
  • Your fire should reach a high enough temperature to avoid deposits building up in the  chimney
  • It should not reach too high a temperature as this could result in a chimney fire
  • Smoke from wood coming into your room can be toxic
  • * **If Smokey when making a fire, open windows/doors till flames replace smoke
  • Always keep watch when tending an unprotected fire or when the burner door is ajar
  • Cheap wood tends to spit out hot embers. Good wood will lesson this occurrence
  • Always use a fire proof container when cleaning out the ash as it may still be hot the next morning

*** Once wood is burning, smoke will almost always disappear if it is good seasoned wood
Prevention
For a few pounds you can buy a temperature thermometer that checks that your fire is at the correct temperature

Every room that has a fire should not only have a smoke alarm but a carbon monoxide detector
Place in the room with the fire and the room upstairs directly above the fire

Our hardwood may smoke when lighting up but once fully alight will not smoke at all
With our wood there should be no unpleasant Smokey smells or woody mustiness in your room when you get the fire to a hot enough temperature
There are many ways to make a fire but taking the correct steps ensures the end result produces a safe, quality fire
